Detox diets seem to be all the rage these days and it is hard to know which ones will be healthy for you, deplete your energy or are just gimmicks to sell you something.
As part of the Tony Robbins event I recently attended in LA, the last day was focused on health and wellness. They asked us to go back home and do a detox for 10 days. I had never done a full on detox before so I was a little hesitant to do so. Not because I wasn't wiling to eliminate certain things from my diet but it felt like a lot of extra mental, physical and emotional work to rejig how I think, shop, and eat.
We were asked to eliminate all sugar, animal flesh, alcohol, caffeine, and dairy from our diets. And to make it even more challenging, I decided to eliminate wheat. I had been having stomach issues and my hunch was that is was related to wheat products, so I thought this was a good time to find out if it was in fact an issue.
Overall it was a very positive experience. I lost weight but did have some energy challenges. Water is one of the biggest areas to increase when detoxing or not. Here are some of things I did in addition to cutting those 6 food groups from my diet.
I decided to augment my detox even more with the assistance of several doTERRA essential oil products to increase the detoxification process.
I created a gel cap with Zendocrine Detoxification Blend, DDR Prime, Lemon and Melaluca each night. dōTERRA Zendocrine® essential oil blend is a proprietary blend of CPTG® essential oils of Rosemary, Cilantro, Juniper Berry, Tangerine, and Geranium that have been studied for their detoxifying properties, ability to support healthy liver function, and purifying effects against unhealthy substances.
I also took many lavender epson salt baths and used a mud mask from my armpits to my elbows. A little trick a girlfriend shared with me on our trip. I know this sounds strange, but I wanted to work harder to suck out impurities from my body and specifically my lymphatic system. There are lymph nodes in your armpits and around the neck, which play an important role in fighting off disease (you probably noticed how they become enlarged when you feel under the weather). So, jamming them with pollutants ( aka DO and antiperspirant) can seriously affect your immune responses. I had this mask at home and it seemed to work great.
I also added my new favorite tea. Turmeric and Ginger tea by Rishi. It is so delicious and zingy that I really don't need coffee to wake up now. Also the health benefits of adding turmeric to your diet is amazing. Doctors are calling it the "wonder" spice. It assists with brain function, it acts as an anti-inflammatory, fights against certain forms of cancer, assist with cardiovascular function, it has mood boosting properties and much more. My point here is work turmeric into you diet stat!
I also had the luxury of having a massage and facial during this process to further detoxify my system. I took a very long steam after my massage to sweat it all out and my aesthetician used a lotus detoxifying lotion on my face that I really liked. See below.
I added plenty of water and working out so I was really sweating. The three main ways you rid your body of toxins is to pee, poop and perspire.
Detoxing your system is a critical part of self-care. You body and mind cannot function when it is filled with toxins. You know the saying... Garbage in, garbage out. To be honest, the hardest part was giving up coffee. I am a 30+ year coffee drinker so the first few days were really tough. But I pushed through and now I am not certain I will go back. Everything I gave up tastes different and in some ways "dangerous" to my body. Maybe this is the whole point of a detox?
I want to leave you with is this. What do you need to detox from your life? Is it certain foods, toxic relationships, negative self-talk, or bad habits? I challenge you all today to take the 10 day detox and see what happens to you mind, body and soul. Who know you just might discover a new you!
